Alabama is Combatting Tax Fraud with Selfies
The state of Alabama is using your selfie as tax fraud prevention. As unexpected as this may seem, it’s true! Alabama is one of the first states to adopt a brand new digital authentication system to prevent someone from filing a fraudulent return with your name and Social Security Number. It is a free and secure mobile app that uses facial recognition technology to verify your identity.
How It Works:
- You download the Alabama eID app on your phone (Click here for a list of supported devices).
- Within the app, take a picture of your driver’s license or state ID card.
- Take a selfie to activate your eID, which will generate a code.
- Register your eID with the Alabama Department of Revenue by going to My Alabama Taxes then click “Register your Alabama eID” and enter the code you were given.
The Alabama eID will help prevent a criminal from filing a tax return with your information. Interestingly, taking a selfie is the only trusted online ID for securing your 2017 Alabama tax refund. If you want to learn more about this, please visit the Alabama eID program website!
